How do you Secure your Home Properly from Intruders?
Most of us are on a tight budget these days, but we still have to make sure that all our bases are covered when it comes to securing our home.
Here’s a list of the most basic security measures that even people on a budget can afford to get…
1. Lighting
Having good lighting is the cheapest security measure that you can fit in and outside your home. Make sure to check that your lights are working on a regular basis and install them in dangerous areas such as by the front door, windows, walls and any other dark spots.
2. Burglar Bars
You might think that burglar bars look really ugly on your home, but they are a necessity – especially in South Africa! If you don’t like the steel bar ones, install InvisiBars or a similar product that can’t be seen.
3. Alarm System
An alarm system is easy to set up and many are affordable for many different budgets. Majority of break-ins happen during the day when it is quiet and most people are at work, so don’t give an intruder the luxury of time and privacy – install an alarm system now.
4. Friendly Neighbours
Your neighbours may have annoying, noisy dogs or maybe you hate that they haven’t trimmed their hedges in ages, BUT having neighbours looking out for you is a free and valuable security measure that is really good to have. Consider downloading the PatrolMan neighbourhood watch app, that way you can keep up to date with the latest crime statistics, incident reports and even use the SOS button to summon help to your location if you are ever in an emergency situation.
QUICK TIP: Don’t ever assume that the upper floors of your house are safe and out of bounds from intruders!
Points to Always Remember:
- There are a lot of other security measures that you can have such as electric fences, garden sensor beams, etc.
- An intruder will target those that present opportunities and convenience, so if they spot valuables through your windows it makes your home more attractive.
- Burglars love the cover of darkness and secluded spots to hide in, don’t give them that option – light up your yard and make sure your yard is well looked after.
- Do you love dogs? If so you’re lucky because intruders are usually scared off by dogs making a noise. Always remember that a dog is not a security tool, but a part of your family!
- Another great tip is to adjust the closing speed of your driveway gate so it is not so slow.
QUICK TIP: Put signs and posters up on your wall and on your house to show possible intruders that you have an alarm system, armed response, neighbourhood crime watch, etc.
Remember that no security measure works alone very well, all of them work together to protect you and your loved ones from potential intruders!
