What Should I do if I Witnessed a Car Accident?
You’re on your way home from work, a car
speeds past you and moments later that same vehicle is involved in a sudden
accident.
You’ve witnessed an accident, so what do
you do now?
You left the scene. Do not panic, there is no legal obligation for you to stay if you simply witnessed the car accident; however it is the right thing for you to do. In some situations, there may be no witnesses around except you, meaning you may have to call the emergency personnel for help. If you are a witness to a car accident in the future, then your support can be beneficial to the people involved.
You stayed on the scene. So you made the
right decision and stayed on the scene to help! Here are some things you need
to do to avoid getting hurt yourself:
-
Drive until you can find a safe
spot to pull over and get out of your car. Don’t cause another accident trying
to help the victims of the first accident!
-
Call the ambulance, emergency
personnel or push the SOS button on the PatrolMan app to summon help.
-
If possible, try and find out if
everyone is okay, but don’t be a hero! Unless you are an experienced doctor or
medical physician, do not attempt to give medical attention to any of the
victims as you may cause them more harm.
-
Try to attempt to calm down any
victims who are in shock. From there you can try and figure out what happened
as you are the primary witness to the accident.
Car accidents can be just as scary to be a
witness to as they are to be a part of. However how you handle it will
determine how it will affect the people involved in the future. You may be the
most important witness to proving someone was driving recklessly, so stay on
the scene if you can and help.
