6 Common Types of Pedestrian-Related Collisions
Pedestrian collisions and accidents can be
serious and often fatal, however they can be avoided if you, as a pedestrian,
ensure that you are always visible, predictable and follow safe practices…
Here are the 6 most common types of
pedestrian-related collisions:
1. The dart out – This collision happens
when a pedestrian suddenly appears on the side of the road and is hit by a
vehicle because the driver had little to no time to react.
2. Intersection dash – Similar to the dart
out, however this collision takes place in an intersection.
3. Multiple threats – When a vehicle stops
to allow a pedestrian to cross the road, they may block the view of a second
vehicle which plans to pass them, this results in the pedestrian being struck.
4. Vehicle turn / merge – A driver may be
distracted by merging or turning so they do not see a pedestrian approaching
and crossing the street.
5. Vendor / bus / ice cream truck, etc. –
Typically a pedestrian collision that involves younger people who are
approaching or leaving a vehicle and an overtaking car does not see them.
6. Backing up – This collision results when
a driver does not look behind them when they are reversing out of a driveway,
parking lot or street.
Be a smart pedestrian – Always be aware of
your surroundings, put away any distractions and do not rely on the driver of a vehicle to see you!
