What causes House Fires and How to Prevent them
Did you know that in South Africa about 3.2% of people will
suffer from burn injuries, most of them being from the poor communities?
But why? Well some of the factors include; more and more
people flocking to urban areas, chaotic unplanned urban development, serious overcrowding,
inadequate electricity use in homes, paraffin used as an energy source and a
lack of education.
The most common reasons for fires starting in homes are:
-- Old / damaged / frayed electric wires on appliances
-- Burning candles
-- Heaters / electric blankets
-- Cigarettes / cigars
-- Fire places
-- Gas leaks
-- Children playing with matches
-- Burning oil on the stove
With the colder months heading in, we will most likely see
an increase in the number fires, burns, smoke inhalation and accidental
ingestion of fuels. Many people in the rural areas who rely on candles and
lanterns for light and fuel or fire for warmth are at major risk.
