8 of the most important Holiday Cooking Safety Tips!
Everyone knows that the most important
thing during the holiday season is sharing delicious food with family and
friends!
However, cooking can be dangerous,
especially if the kitchen is filled with hungry family members and friends. Don’t
burn the house down – use these 8 important holiday cooking safety tips…
1. Do not leave your cooking unattended –
Your whole family is over for Christmas day, and everyone is distracting you
and trying to get your attention. Fires can happen in a blink of the eye, so
always keep a close eye on your cooking and NEVER leave it unattended!
2. Use a potholder and oven mitts – Not only
do these items protect you from hurting yourself, but they can also be used to
smother the flames should a fire actually start in the kitchen.
3. Be careful when you open the oven & hot
lids – Steam is just as dangerous as fire and it can burn you, so tilt the lid
away from your face when you are checking the food on the stove or in the oven.
4. Roll up your sleeves – Keep in mind that
long sleeves can easily catch a light on a hot stove, plus it isn’t fun to dip
your sleeves in the food you’re cooking. Always roll up your sleeves or simply
wear short sleeves.
5. Make sure to have a fire extinguisher
near the kitchen – Just in case of emergencies!
6. Clean your hands and surfaces – Washing your
hands beforehand and keeping everything clean in the kitchen will ensure you
and your guests avoid getting sick.
7. Keep leftovers in the fridge – Some food
goes off a lot quicker than others, so be sure to pack everything away in
containers and refrigerate after everyone has finished dishing up and eating.
8. Do not cross contaminate your food –
Your meats and veggies should not be cut and prepared on the same surface, to
make life easier just prepare everything else first and leave the meat until
last.
