11 Tips for Avoiding Animals on the Road

It is impossible to keep all animals away from the roads and animals such as cattle, horses and antelope are the most dangerous to someone driving a vehicle.

Here are a few tips to keep yourself safe and avoid animals on the road…

• Be alert when you see animal crossing warning signs – these signs are there for a reason!

• Do not get distracted while you are driving – put away your cell phone, don’t eat while you are driving and avoid getting distracted by other passengers.

• Get in the habit of scanning the road ahead and around you while you drive.

• If you are driving on a road that is unfamiliar, be vigilant and ask any passengers to keep their eyes on both sides of the roadway to check for any stray animals.

•  If you spot one animal – be alert because there might be more nearby!

• Use your bright lights as much as possible when you are travelling on a road alone, this will give you more time to spot and react to animals on the road

• Always obey the rules of the road and always put your seatbelt on

• Do not speed – this will give you as well as the animal more time to react, especially at night time

• Be alert and aware of the surroundings you are driving in.

• If you are driving and you spot an animal in the road – Slow down, tap your brakes to warn the drivers behind you and honk your horn.

• Always consider the land around you and whether it could host large animals such as cattle, etc.
