Home Security for the Non-stop Traveller

An essential part of making sure your trip is enjoyable is making sure that your home is safe and secure while you are gone.

If you are a non-stop traveller, make sure you use these home security tips for complete peace of mind while you are globetrotting…

1. Keep all the details about your trip private. Most of us like to advertise our lives all over social media! And while you may be tempted to share your new and exciting travel plans, it is best to not broadcast it online that your home will be empty as this will only encourage criminals.

2. Install a home security system. Although it is sometimes expensive to have a home security system as well as cameras, it is a worthwhile solution to invest in. Having an alarm system is a great way to deter any burglars from trying to break in.

3. Extra emergency keys. NEVER hide your spare key under your doormat or in the post box! These are the most obvious places and they’ll be where burglars look first. Don’t make it easy for them – rather give your emergency keys to a friend, family member or trusted neighbour.

4. Secure your doors and windows. Invest in break-resistance glass or burglar bars for your windows and reliable safety gates for all your doors. It is also a good idea to set your lights on a timer to hide the fact that you are travelling and your home is empty.

5. Make friends with your neighbours. It is always a good idea to know who the people living around you are. Why? Because they are the perfect candidates to keep a watchful eye on your home when you are away.

Consider joining your local Neighbourhood Watch organization and help promote greater safety and security while also reaping the benefits yourself. Download the innovative PatrolMan app to make use of a variety of great features, like the SOS emergency button, live hotspot map, incident feed and so much more!

6. Get your friends or family to visit. If you don’t have neighbours who can keep an eye on your home, ask a trusted friend or family to visit your home while you’re away. They can pick up any post, check for mechanical issues, and even water the plants. The frequent traffic will help deter burglars from staking out your home for their plans.
