4. Secure your doors and windows. Invest in break-resistance glass or burglar bars for your windows and reliable safety gates for all your doors. It is also a good idea to set your lights on a timer to hide the fact that you are travelling and your home is empty.

5. Make friends with your neighbours. It is always a good idea to know who the people living around you are. Why? Because they are the perfect candidates to keep a watchful eye on your home when you are away.

They can pick up any post, check for mechanical issues, and even water the plants. The frequent traffic will help deter burglars from staking out your home for their plans.
