Teaching your Child to Cross the Road Safely
We all know that crossing the road can be
really dangerous, that is why it is so important to teach your child how to
cross the road safely…
Follow these safety tips to help teach your
little one to cross the road safely.
- Hold Hands
Holding a grown-ups hand is vital, and
children need to understand this! Holding hands ensures that your child does
not run off or get distracted. If you are pushing a pram, etc. make sure they
hold onto it instead.
- Use the Green Cross Code
Focus on these important steps when your
children are crossing the road:
1.
Find a safe place to cross
2.
Stop at the curb
3.
Always look right, left and
then right again
4.
If the road is clear, cross
over but NEVER run!
5.
Keep looking out for
approaching traffic as you cross
- ONLY cross at these specific places...
1. Zebra crossings
2. Pedestrian crossings
2. Pedestrian crossings
3. A child crossing with a crossing guard
- STOP
A lot of children, who get hurt crossing
the road, say that they did not stop or did not even look before they started
crossing the road. Get your children to practice safe crossing by getting them
to teach their friends or teddies and dolls – teaching others will help them
drum the message into their head.
Take extra care when you teach your child
to cross the road safely – it can be dangerous for a small child to remember the
rules, so be sure to practice with them!
