How to avoid a hijacking:

-- Always be alert and aware of your surroundings
-- If you have an electric gate, open it before you have to stop your car completely to allow for a quick getaway
-- If you don’t have a electric gate, take the key out with you
-- Make sure your driveway has proper lighting and no overgrown bushes
-- Avoid driving through high crime areas

What to do if you are involved in a hijacking:

-- NEVER lose your temper and get angry, show them you’re not a threat and do as they say!
-- Lift up your arms and show them that you have no weapons
-- Unbuckle your seatbelt, put your car in neutral and get out
-- If you have children in the car, calmly tell the hijackers that you need to get them out
-- Surrender your vehicle and move as far away as you can
-- Don’t try and get your bag, purse, wallet, etc. just leave everything and get out
-- Try not to make direct eye contact with the hijackers, they may see it as a threat
-- Don’t turn your back on them – your organs are most exposed at the back
-- Stay calm
